When should you dive in Sado?
Best seasons and marine highlights

Category: Sado Ocean | Published: May 30, 2026

Sado offers a different experience in every season: clear summer waters, autumn schools and larger fish, and quiet winter dives in a drysuit. Children aged 10 and above can try diving without a certification. Our Sado dive shop shares seasonal highlights and practical tips for first-time visitors.

Sado: a rich temperate sea in Japan

Around Sado, the warm Tsushima Current meets colder water, creating a rich temperate marine environment. Fish from warmer waters share the sea with cold-water species, and the highlights change with the seasons. Around 90% of our dive sites are just 3 to 15 minutes from the harbor by boat, making journeys short even for those concerned about seasickness.

What to see in each season

Summer (July to September): clear water and peak season

Summer is the most popular season. As the water warms up, a 5 mm wetsuit is suitable for about 3 months, from mid-July to mid-October. It is a good time for a first trial dive or your first dives after certification. Courses also fill up, so we recommend booking early for summer.

Autumn (September to November): schools and larger fish

The water retains its warmth and marine life is active in autumn, with more opportunities to see schooling and migratory fish. Experienced divers have plenty to enjoy. If you completed a course in summer, it is also a good time to put those fresh skills to use on a guided dive.

Winter to spring (December to June): quiet dives in a drysuit

Outside the wetsuit season, we dive in drysuits. With fewer visitors, this is a good time to take your time observing marine life. April to June is also a good option for courses before the busy summer season.

Sado's Asian sheepshead wrasse: how likely are you to see one?

The large-faced Asian sheepshead wrasse, known as kobudai in Japanese, is an icon of Sado. At Akaiwa and the wreck site in the Kitakoura area, the chance of an encounter is about 90% when conditions allow us to visit. Accessible sites depend on the day's sea conditions and your course. If seeing a kobudai is a priority, please tell us when booking.

Useful information for first-time visitors

  • Trial diving is available from age 10, including for those who are not confident swimmers.
  • You can dive with contact lenses. Prescription masks are also available to borrow.
  • The route between Niigata and Ryotsu is a convenient way to reach Sado: about 1 hour by high-speed boat or 2.5 hours by ferry.
  • Our Sea Conditions page provides a guide to the day's conditions.

Sado's sea changes with every season. If you are unsure when to visit, please ask us. We can suggest a season and course based on your experience and interests.
