March 8: My First Hanayagiumiushi in 12 Years of Diving

March 8: My First Hanayagiumiushi in 12 Years of Diving, photo 1

This is Koide from Sado!

I've been diving in Sado for 12 years.

And I finally met the nudibranch

I had been searching for all this time.

It was

the hanayagiumiushi!

Today Lake Kamo was rough,

with a strong west wind blowing

and the surface splashing about.

Visibility had dropped too,

so honestly, I hesitated a little.

But

of course, I went in!

And then…

believe it or not,

4 hanayagiumiushi!

Before the dive,

"Wouldn't it be great if one were there?"

we were saying as we looked through the field guide.

I never imagined it would actually show up…

The hanayagiumiushi is a nudibranch

that is common in places like Hokkaido, Tohoku,

Russia and the Sea of Okhotsk,

where the water is cold.

Today's sizes were

1 to 5 cm.

If you'd like to see them,

we're waiting for your requests!

The sea in Sado is a lot of fun!
