April 22 (Sat): Kitakoura (Akaiwa and Nagate)

April 22 (Sat): Kitakoura (Akaiwa and Nagate), photo 1

Good evening, this is Koide from Freeway.

The wonderful weather continues!

Today we held fun diving at Kitakoura!

The sea was fairly calm too.

Dive 1 was at Akaiwa.

Visibility was maybe about 5 m (yikes).

On the bottom at Akaiwa you can see sea pens and umisaboten (sea cactus). They're all busily feeding on plankton!

A big mizudako (North Pacific giant octopus).

In winter they come into the diving area to spawn, so you can see them then. Seeing one at this time of year is rare!

It was over 1 m long!

This is a mizutama umiushi (a nudibranch).

A seasonal nudibranch you can only see in April and May.

So pretty!

Dive 2 was at Nagate.

Visibility here was about the same as on dive 1!

Air trapped under the rock ceiling reflected the scenery, making for an interesting view!

Nagate is great fun for nudibranch hunting!

They keep turning up one after another, so you get absorbed in seeing how many species you can find!

Search the sand, the rock faces, and the surface of the seaweed!

Tomorrow is the Kitakoura safety prayer festival!

We'll all be going to pray for safe diving in Sado!

Today's dive site: Kitakoura
