The shipwreck
Dive date: July 19
Dive sites: Mitate shipwreck, Kitakoura Akaiwa
Weather: Sunny
Wave height: 0.5 m
Current: Weak
Underwater temp: 18 to 22°C
Marine life seen: kobudai (Asian sheepshead wrasse), black sea bream (kurodai), striped beakfish (ishidai), Japanese rockfish (mebaru), a huge school of aji (horse mackerel), kijihata (red spotted grouper), damselfish, schools of chagara (a goby), umazurahagi (black scraper), John Dory, kokeginpo (a small blenny), isoginpo (a blenny), common octopus (madako), sumizome mino umiushi and akaboshiumiushi (nudibranchs), and more
Today there was a slight current near the surface. Maybe because of that, visibility was better in the shallows, and it seems to be recovering.
The mebaru at the shipwreck seem to find it cozy inside the deck and show no sign of coming out. They rest calmly, unbothered by the divers peeking in. That laid back vibe is just irresistible.
The kobudai at Akaiwa is friendly and strikes all kinds of poses for us divers. Time for a kobudai photo session!
Everyone was snapping away from all sorts of angles.
The aji are schooling in huge numbers at both sites. Watching inada and kanpachi (greater amberjack) attack those schools is spectacular.
These days I keep thinking how much I'd love to run into that scene.
